How to Clean Your Fireplace

Farewell, Filthy Fireplace

If the thought of cleaning your fireplace has you fuming, don't fret. Ridding your fireplace of ash, soot and smoke build-up doesn't need to be a time-consuming, hair-pulling task. A clean fireplace is not only attractive - it's safe. By following a few easy steps, you'll have a tip-top fireplace in no time.

What you'll need

The shovel and broom that comes with your set of fireplace tools will come in handy when it's time to clean your fireplace. But they're not the only items you'll need. Before you start, have the following supplies ready.

Uniflame Mini Black and Brass Fireplace Stove Tool Set
  • Goggles for eye protection
  • A stiff nylon scrub brush
  • Rubber gloves
  • Plastic drop cloth
  • TSP (tri-sodium phosphate) or phosphate-free TSP substitute
  • Plastic bucket
  • Newspapers
  • Trash can

Getting Started

Make sure the fireplace and ashes have cooled. Put down a plastic drop cloth to kneel on, and have a large trash can nearby. Use your fireplace shovel and brush to remove ashes and debris.

Line the fireplace with newspapers to catch the soot when it falls. Use the scrub brush to loosen soot from the fireplace walls, starting at the top. When you're done, toss the soiled newspaper.

Cleaning the Fireplace Walls and Floor

Line the fireplace with layers of newspaper. Put on your rubber gloves and goggles. Fill a bucket with a mixture of six tablespoons of TSP or TSP substitute, one cup of chlorine bleach, and one gallon of warm water.

Dip your brush in the bucket and scrub the fireplace walls, starting at the top. Clean the fireplace floor the same way. Wipe down all the surfaces with fresh water and clean rags or paper towels.
